John Weeronga Bartoo - Australia

'Linga the Lizard', acrylic on canvas, 45 x 45 cm. or 17.6" x17.6" in.

John was born in Brisbane, a long way from the dusty plains of his ancestors and the Kooma Tribal lands in South Western Queensland near Dirranbandi.

It was in late 2002, while recovering from illness, that he felt an urge to paint.  At that time he did not understand where this feeling came from as he had been raised in a European lifestyle.

John Weeronga Bartoo is  a self taught artist and through his art he is learning more about his culture. Promoting his art and communicating with people has given him more confidence in himself.

'Painting primarily for myself I am very happy when others enjoy my work.  I believe that the spirits of my ancestors are guiding me with my art and through my art I can express the stories of not only the Dreamtime but of my family and my life's journey.  As for my future in art I will be guided by my heart and the spirits.'
